How Do Roller Shades Work?
Roller shades consist of a solid piece of high-quality material that rolls up and down, covering or exposing your window. The material is wound around a hollow tube, securely held in place by side brackets. Depending on your preference, you can mount your roller shades either inside your window frame for a seamless look or outside the frame for complete light control. Specify your mounting preference when placing your order on our website.
Understanding Light Gaps
It’s important to note the light gap. When opting for an inside mount, there will be a gap of approximately ¾” on either side to prevent the material from fraying as it moves. This ensures the longevity of your shades. If eliminating all light is crucial and you don’t plan to layer with drapes, consider an outside mount to block out light completely and order black out roller shades.
What is the Openness Factor for Solar Shades?
Openness, also referred to as opacity level or openness percentage, measures how tightly or closely yarns are woven, affecting the amount of sunlight streaming through the fabric. A lower openness value (1% to 3%) means the fabric is more tightly woven to block view and light. Conversely, a higher openness value (10% to 25%) refers to a looser weave to allow more light and better see-through. A custom solar shade with a medium openness percentage (5% to 7%) is the best option to preserve the view while preventing damage to your interior finishes and furnishings due to harsh UV rays.

We can make ANY product (Drapery, Valance, Roman Shade, Pillow, Duvet Cover, etc.) using any fabric or style. Please message me if you would like to use this fabric with a different lining, pleat, or as a different product! I am happy to fulfill custom requests.
What's Included
Made by professional seamstresses in our factory in Toronto Ontario, your Roman Shade will include the following:
- top quality fabric as described in the product details above
- your choice of polycotton or blackout lining (note: sheer Roman Shades do not have a blackout lining option)
- chain control mechanism (please choose which side the mechanism should be placed on) or motorized mechanism. (note: for Top Down Bottom Up Roman Shades there are two mechanisms and chains on both sides; one regular chain and one to manage the top function.)
- weighted bar in bottom hem
- fabric covered mechanism measuring 1-1/2" deep
- instructions on installing and dressing your shade
- Roman Shade mechanism, brackets and screws are included
Important Points
The Roman Shade is made to order. Please provide accurate measurements using our measuring instructions (for inside and outside mounted shades)
For successful inside installation your window frame must be at least 1.5 inches deep to accommodate the mechanism. If your window depth is less than this, please consider an outside mount. Please note - for Top Down Bottom Up Roman Shades there must be at least 3 inches depth on the window frame, to accommodate the two mechanisms required.
