What is a relaxed Roman shade?

A relaxed Roman shade is sewn without a rigid bar across the bottom hem, so the lower edge settles into a soft, shallow curve instead of a straight line. Raised, it stacks in gentle folds; lowered, it drapes like tailored fabric rather than a flat panel. It is the least hardware-looking Roman shade — which is why it is our most-ordered fold.

Relaxed or flat — which fold to choose?

Choose relaxed for softness: bedrooms, living rooms, anywhere the window should look settled and calm. Choose flat for a crisp, tailored panel that shows a pattern edge-to-edge. Many of our shades split the difference — flat folds above, a relaxed curve at the hem — so you get order and softness in one shade.

Fabric makes the drape

The curve only works if the cloth can fall. 100% linen drapes with body and texture, faux linen holds the same look with easier care — 22+ colours across the range — and sheer linen lets the light through while the hem keeps its shape. Order free swatches and crush the corner in your hand: that is the drape you will live with.

Light, from sheer to dark

Unlined sheer filters daylight and softens the view. A privacy lining keeps silhouettes invisible at night. A soft blackout lining darkens the room for sleep — see blackout Roman shades for how we make a bedroom genuinely dark.

Relaxed Roman shades — questions we answer

Inside or outside mount for a relaxed fold?
Both work. Inside mount shows the curved hem against the glass and keeps trim visible — it needs exact measurements, which is what our 1/4″ sewing and guided measuring are for. Outside mount adds coverage and makes a small window read taller.

Can a relaxed Roman shade be blackout?
Yes — we sew the blackout lining into the shade. One honest note: the curved hem can let a thin line of light at the sill. For the darkest result choose outside mount with overlap, or a flat fold in the same blackout fabric.

What about wide windows?
We sew up to 105×120″. On large shades the fabric weight matters: cordless gets heavy to lift, so for wide or tall windows we recommend the child-safe chain or a motorized shade with remote and schedule.

How long until it hangs on my window?
Made to order and sewn in 10 days or less in our Toronto workroom, then 7–14 days in transit depending on where you are. You approve a sketch before we cut, and if our mistake makes it wrong, we remake it.
