How to measure your window for Roman shades: the questions buyers ask us

These are the measuring questions buyers actually send us — answered the same way we answer them one-to-one. For the full illustrated walkthrough, see our measuring guide.

How do I measure for an inside mount?

Measure the inside of the window frame. Width: left-to-right along the top, middle and bottom; round to the nearest 1/8″ and use the narrowest of the three. Height: along the left, middle and right; round to 1/8″ and use the tallest. Do not make any deductions yourself — our workroom accounts for clearances. Record it as Width × Height.

How do I measure for an outside mount?

Measure the width across the casing (top, middle, bottom) and use the largest; we recommend adding 0.5–1″ on each side for coverage. For height, mark where you want the top of the shade to sit — allow at least 3″ above the casing for the mechanism, or add 10–12″ if you don't want the raised shade blocking the glass — then measure down to the sill. Add 1″ at the bottom if there is no sill. Round to 1/8″ and use the largest.

Can I mount the shade under crown molding?

Yes — mount it on the wall just below the molding. For length, measure from under the crown molding down to the windowsill: that is your finished shade length. For width, measure the full window including the casing and add about 2″ total. Send us the numbers and the fabric you like, and we will confirm exactly how to order it.

What format do you need the measurements in?

Width first, then height (W × H), rounded to the nearest 1/8″. That is all — we sew the shade to your numbers within 1/4″.

What if I measure wrong?

You approve a sketch before we cut, so there is a checkpoint between your tape measure and our scissors. And if our mistake makes the shade wrong, we remake it. Unsure about anything? Send the numbers first — checking them costs nothing.
