Zoe is an Italian linen with a quiet, uneven weave — the kind that softens afternoon light instead of shutting it out. It comes to us woven 118 inches wide, so your shade is cut across the roll in a single piece up to 82″ wide. No centre seam running down the middle of your window.

Screens lie about colour, and this fabric in particular reads warmer in person than it does on a phone. Order swatches before you commit — they arrive flat in an envelope and take about a week.

One note on Cordoba Snowflake: that colourway is woven 54″ wide rather than 118″. For shades wider than 50″ in this fabric, the shade is constructed with two symmetrical side seams — one on each side, mirrored from the centre — to achieve your custom width. It is a deliberate, balanced detail, not a patch.

How the relaxed fold behaves

A Classic Relaxed shade has no rods or rod pockets in the front fabric. The support rods are sewn into the lining on the back instead, and only a few small hand stitches hold the two layers together. That is why the face of the shade stays clean and unbroken, and why it gathers into soft horizontal folds — not sharp pleats — when you raise it.

With polycotton lining, light passes through and you will faintly read the rods behind the linen. With blackout you will not see them at all.

Lining, and why blackout keeps the colour true

Polycotton is the everyday choice: it gives the linen body, evens out the light, and keeps the colour honest. Blackout is built differently — we make the shade first with a white polycotton lining, then add a separate full-blackout layer behind it. The extra step costs us a little more time, and it is the reason a blackout Zoe still looks like Zoe from inside the room instead of turning grey.

Measuring — I will check your numbers

Use a steel tape measure and round to the nearest 1/8 inch. For an inside mount, measure the width at the top, middle and bottom and give me the smallest; measure the height at the left, centre and right and give me the largest. We take the deductions for you — order the opening size, not a guess. For an outside mount, take the widest point of the opening and add 1″ per side, and add 4″ to the height (3″ above, 1″ below). We sew to the size you order.

Send your numbers with your order and I will go over them before anything is cut. If something looks off, I will write to you first.

Made to order

Cut and sewn for your window, then shipped in 2–3 weeks. Most custom workrooms quote six to eight weeks.

Because it is made to your measurements, a custom shade is not returnable — so we do the checking up front, and if the shade is wrong because of something on our side, we remake it. That has been the deal for twenty years and 2,000+ five-star orders.

Control

Chain comes standard with a white plastic bead chain, secured to the wall with a tensioner so there is no loose loop hanging. Metal chain upgrades in silver, black and gold are available — ask and I will add it before production. Cordless is available up to the sizes shown in the dropdown; beyond that the shade is simply too heavy for the mechanism to hold reliably, so we do not offer it. Motorized is available in every size.

Care

Dry cleaning highly recommended. Linen with a lining behaves badly in a washing machine — it shrinks unevenly and the two layers stop agreeing with each other.

Questions people ask before ordering

Will it actually fit my window?
Yes, within a quarter of an inch. You send the measurements, I check them against the mount type before we cut, and we take the inside-mount deductions ourselves. If the finished shade is wrong because of our error, we remake it at no cost.

How dark does the blackout lining get?
Effectively full darkness through the panel itself. A small amount of light will always come around the edges of any shade; an outside mount with 1″ of overlap per side reduces it noticeably. For nurseries, order the outside mount.

How long until it ships?
Two to three weeks from the day your measurements are confirmed. Everything is cut and sewn in our Toronto workroom, then shipped free anywhere in the US and Canada.

Can I see the linen first?
Yes, and you should. Swatches ship flat and arrive in about a week. Hold the swatch against your wall in daylight and again at night with the lamps on — Zoe changes quite a lot between the two.

Is a corded shade safe with small children?
The bead chain is anchored to the wall with a tensioner, so nothing hangs loose in the room. If you would rather have no chain at all, choose cordless where it is offered, or motorized in the larger sizes.
