More about linen: light & lining options, colours, care, FAQ

Why 100% linen

Linen is a stubborn fibre, and that turns out to be the point. It is stronger wet than dry, so it survives cleaning that flattens softer cloth, and it holds its colour in a south-facing window better than most dyed synthetics. It also moves. The slubs catch light unevenly, so a linen shade reads as texture rather than a flat panel of colour.

The trade-off is honest: linen creases. On a Roman shade that works in your favour, because the fold lines you want are the ones we press in. A relaxed linen shade settles into its own drape after a few weeks and looks better for it. If you want a crisp fold that never softens, faux linen is the better call — and we will tell you so.

22+ colours, and why we send swatches first

Screens lie about linen. The same weave photographs warm on one monitor and grey on another, and the north light in your room will shift it again. We keep 22+ colours in stock, from chalk and oatmeal through to olive, navy and charcoal. Hold three of them against your own window before you decide. Swatches are free and the shipping is credited to your shade order.

Filtered, dimmed, or genuinely dark

Unlined linen filters daylight into a warm glow and gives you privacy in daytime only. A polycotton lining dims the room and shields the face fabric from sun. The suede-feel blackout lining blocks 100% of direct light through the panel — what is left comes around the edges, which is why the 1/4″ fit and the choice of inside or outside mount matter as much as the lining itself. Blackout versions start at $289.

Living with a linen shade

Dust it with a soft brush attachment every month or two. Spot-clean with cold water and skip the bleach. For a full clean, dry-clean only — we include disassembly instructions so the shade comes apart and goes back together without a trip to a workroom. Linen softens over years of this. It does not thin.
